Gay Barcelona and Sitges
This city is gay. Very gay.
Barcelona is one of Europe's most popular gay destinations, not only for its cosmopolitan urban attractions, but also for the very
gay Sitges beaches nearby. The city has become so gay that there are now arguably more places that could be described as straight-friendly
than those labelled gay-friendly. Gay and straight blend in everywhere, and the city's vibrant culture is shared by everyone.
It has become a trendy destination thanks to gay travellers, with the summer months and Carnival making it look like an exclusive gay resort with sophisticated restaurants and hotels. But even throughout the year gay Barcelonans often end up here for the weekend, with the gay beach in the center often turning into a catwalk for swimwear fashion.
There are literally dozens of gay cafes, restaurants, bars, and clubs in Barcelona and Sitges, but these are the gay destinations that should top your list when you're in town:
CAFÉS, BARS, CLUBS
This is the obligatory meeting point in the city, with its music and lighting giving it a clubby ambience. Sit at the bar or by the low tables in the corner for a drink before migrating to the clubs along with everyone else.
G CAFE - Carrer de Muntaner, 24
This café-lounge is the place for a drink early in the night, with an atypical (for a gay venue) soundtrack of jazz and music videos.
ATAME - Carrer del Consell de Cent, 257
This large sleek bar located in "Gayxample" is a lively place with loud Spanish pop music, and regular live shows.
PUNTO BCN - Carrer de Muntaner, 63
This is usually the first bar everyone goes to late in the afternoon or early in the evening. Local gays, lesbians, and tourists chill out by the long bar, and admire the occasional art exhibits.
STRASS - C/ Consell de Cent, 245
This popular bar attracts a younger crowd, who enjoy the night on its small dancefloor or socialize over a drink.
This bright, stylish bar has a cool design décor and offers cheap drinks, which explains why everyone comes here before clubbing.
Formerly the "Six Bar", this trendy club is also a restaurant. It has a stylish interior and live DJ's on weekends.
Being so close to a number of gay bars means that this ends up being a likely clubbing destination in the city. On weekends there are two dancefloors, with one dedicated to Spanish music, and the other to electronic sounds. There are also special dance shows on Saturdays.
Axel Sky Bar
Good chill out music is the soundtrack while you sip on equally good cocktails at this bar in the Axel Hotel. Open to non-hotel guests, there is a gay party every week.
DIETRICH - Consell de Cent 255
There was a time when this was the most popular gay bar in the city. Others have taken that title, but it remains busy with a dancefloor in the back often featuring gogo dancers. It's also known for is drag queen shows.
There are several "Arenas" in town, an emblematic club group with different incarnations as "Arena Sala Classic," "Arena Sala Dandy," "Arena Sala Madre," and "Arena Sala VIP". They differ in music styles and ambience, but they all guarantee some of Barcelona's best gay parties. Check the website for more information about each venue.
Barcelona has quite a large number of gay saunas. They offer everything you'd expect, including some rent boys. Two of the best are CASANOVA (Casanova, 57), popular with younger guys and always crowded during the day, and SAUNA BCN (Tuset, 1) one of the cleanest in the city and with theme nights.
Next Town Ladies
Who says girls don't party as much as boys do? Experience the girls-only NextTownLadies party and you'll have that myth dispelled.
Comedor del Axel
It serves a fantastic buffet breakfast, but it's the creative cuisine at lunch and dinner time and its excellent wine choices that should bring you to the Axel Gay Hotel's dining room.
Book a table for dinner at this gay restaurant serving Italian-inspired cuisine. Whether you go for a pizza or a risotto, you'll be surrounded by the seductive red and white colors of the stylish décor.
CAFÉS, BARS, CLUBS
This is the place for cocktails and chilling out. Come for a drink in the late afternoon for the sunset and stay for dinner in one of Sitges' most sophisticated gay hotspots.
This is the place for drinks early in the day, in a space with a French touch. The staff is friendly, an attitude that rubs off on the crowd.
Popular Bourbon's is a cruisy bar where the drinks are reasonably priced and the atmosphere is always lively, enhanced by the videos on the walls.
Parrots dedicates itself fully to gay attractions in the city, with a pub, a restaurant, and a sauna. The terrace at the pub serves late breakfasts, while the restaurant offers an international menu. Check the website for everything that's going on.
Now open for over a quarter of a century, this was one of the first gay bars in Spain. Local gay Sitgeans love the more hardcore atmosphere of the place, culminating in a weekly foam party or the night where all the lights are turned off and the bar is one big dark room.
The Organic Club
This club hosts different parties every day of the week throughout the year, with Spanish pop, europop, and house music blasting from its sound system. It only gets busy late at night (after 3AM), so make this your final destination on a Sitges night out.
GBP - Gay Beach Party
Look out for the Gay Beach Party when you're in town. Held at the L'Atlantida disco once a week, this is an open air party with its own private beach. It lasts until much after the sun has risen, making this an experience you can't miss in Sitges.
SAUNA SITGES (C/ Espalter, 11)
In addition to the usual services, Sitges' gay sauna is known for it foam parties during the summer. You'll know when they take place through the flyers found on the beach.
The Legend Party
After several editions, this girls-just-want-to-have-fun party has indeed become legendary.
Featuring a very contemporary décor, this restaurant is the favorite of gay visitors. It's an excellent choice for brunch, and the service is friendly.
The location could not be better for this seafront restaurant and bar. The clientele is mixed, so you'll also see some families and straight couples, but it's still one of the most gay-friendly eateries in town. It's good for a late breakfast, while also offering a good-value menu of the day at lunchtime.
